Bowl History:
The Independence Bowl began in 1976 and has been played since its inception at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. Initially the game hosted the champion of the Southland Conference against an at large opponent. After the split of Division I football into two divisions (and the subsequent move of the Southland Conference to I-AA in 1981), the bowl began inviting two at-large teams. From 1995-1997 the bowl hosted a SEC team against an at-large opponent. Since 1998 the bowl has featured a match-up between schools from the SEC and the Big 12.
